W. A. Heffernan was taken to a Minneapolis hospital Monday for futher treatment. Mr. Heffernan's condition is not the best and his many friends in Sherburn and vicinity hope that it may be possible to restore him to his former good health.

Young Banker Dies at Rochester After Short Illness due to Complications from Influenza
W. A. Heffernan, one of the organizers and former cashier of the Farmers' State Bank of Sherburn, died at Rochester Saturday night. The body was sent to his old home at Platteville, Wis. Mr. Heffernan's death resulted from complications following influenza, in 1918. For months he lingered between life and death but finally improved and after anoperation for goiter, recently regained much of his former ruggedness. He was in The Sentinel office a few days ago, and appreared practically a well man. The Sherburn Advance-Standard says: "Mr. Heffernan was down town Thursday. That night he suffered a severe relapse and was taken to Rochester the following day. Mrs. Heffernan was at this bedside when the end came, as was C. A. Young who accompanied him to Rochester." "The untimely death of Mr. Hefferman has cast a pall of gloom over the community, whose people he learned to love and esteem him for his hight character and numerous good qualities." "Mr. Hefferman came to Sherburn from Iowa in the fall of 1917. He is survived by a widow and two children."

First Cashier of Farmers State Bank Succumbs After Long Illness
The community was shocked last Sunday when the news reached here that W. A. Heffernan, former cashier of the Farmers State Bank had died at Rochester Saturday night. Up to a little over week ago Mr. Heffernan had made wonderful progress towards recovery following an illness of nearly two years. About two months ago he had recovered to a point where he underwent an operation for goitre, following which he gained rapidly in health, so much so tha he went down to Iowa to look over prespective situations in the banking business. He was down town Thursday and was appareantly in good spirits. That same night, however, he suffered a serious relapse and upon the advice of the attending doctor was taken to Rochester the following day, where he passed away the following night. Mrs. Heffernan was at his bedside when the end came, as was C. A. Young, who accompanied him there. The untimely death of Mr. Heffernan has cast a pall of gloom over the community whose people had learned to love and esteem him for his high character and numerous good qualities. The surviving widow and two children have indeed suffered a severe loss and profound sympathy go out to them in their hour of grief. Mr. Heffernan came to Sherburn from Iowa in the fall of 1917, having accepted the position as cashier of the newly established Farmers State Bank, which opened the latter part of October. He was a capable man and made himself very popular with the patrons of the new financial institution. In the fall of 1919, two years later, he suffered an attack of flu and although he recovered from this, the disease brought on other complications against which he made a brave and determined fight for a period of nearly two years. The remains were shipped Rochester to Platteville, Wisconsin, his childhood home, for burial.

Walter A. Heffernan was born in Hazel Green Township, Grant County, Wis., January 25, 1876, and died July 21, 1921 at Rochester, Minn., after an illness of about two years. He graduated from the Platteville Normal School in class of 1902, after which he taught school for a number of years. The last ten years he has been interested in the banking business and shortly before his death was cashier of the Farmers' State Bank at Shurburn, Minn. He was the son of Maurice and Elizabeth Heffernan, who both preceded him the grave, as alos did two brothers, William and Thomas. He was married Dec. 26, 1906, to Miss Laura Bethurem, of Millersburg, Ill. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, one son, Pual, 12 years old, and daughter, Virginia, 6 years, two sisters, Mrs. E. J. Osborne and Mrs. Grant Wills, and eigth brothers, all of whom were present at the funeral. He was a consistent member of the Methodist church and took an active interest in all matters pertaining to church and school work, a kind and considerate husband and a loving father. He was a man of sunny disposition, a good honorable and upright citizen and beloved by all with whom he came in contact. His remains were brought to Platteville Monday to the home of his brother, Oscar Heffernan. He was a member of the Masonic Order and was buried with Masonic honors Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 2, 1921 at the Methodist Church and laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery, Platteville, Wis., beside his father and mother and brother Thomas. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Merrifield. ___

Mrs. W. A. Heffernan has decided to move to Ames, Iowa, to make her home, and she had her household goods shipped to that point the first of the week. Mrs. Heffernan and her children are held in high esteem by Sherburn people and their departure from the community will be regretted by everyone. They left yesterday for their new home.

Marriage Notes:
Walter and Laura lived in Chicago but moved when they had children so their children wouldn't be raised in a big city. Virginia said she would like to say she's from Chicago rather than a "wide spot in the rode" (Lovilia, Iowa).
