This family, Joseph Sr., wife Mary (Sykes) and five sons sailed from
Liverpool February 14, 1842, on the ship "Siddons" and landed in New
York on April 2, 1842 after a stormy voyage of seven weeks. The
Armitages first settled in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, moving next to
Farmamsville, Mass., then to New Oxford, Mass. During their stay in
New Oxford, Joseph made a hurried trip to southern Illinois looking
for a farm, but he became ill so returned to his family. After a
total of four years in the East, he moved the family via the Great
Lakes and arrived December 25, 1846 to Hutisford, Dodge County,
Wisconsin, where he lived the remainder of his life with the exception
of the last few weeks. (Hutisford was changed to Neosho, Wisconsin).
